My Cable Car Ride in Lisbon

My Cable Car Ride in Lisbon

Dear Travel Diary

Dear Travel Diary,

Today I took a six-minute cable car ride in Lisbon. I hate heights, so I was pretty scared, but I still found my ride on the Telcabine Lisboa a very enjoyable experience.

A few weeks ago, when I was living near Porto, I wanted to take a cable car ride, but my fear got the best of me so that never happened. I had no idea it was possible to take a cable car ride in Lisbon as well, but I found out about while I was researching things to do in the area and the cable cars I saw in pictures didn’t look to be travelling nearly as high in the sky as the ones at Porto. I made up my mind I was going to do it and I did. I’m glad I did too, but the idea of trusting one’s life to a piece of cable is still pretty frightening. For me anyway. That cable has got to be under a lot of stress.

As is often the case in my life, I happened to be in the right place at the right time. Although I am a fan of the Eurovision Song Contest, I never watch the news, had forgotten Portugal won the contest last year and had no idea that I’d chosen to visit Lisbon at the time of the Eurovision Song Contest. I discovered that last week when I saw all the Eurovision flags hanging from lamp posts. Today, while I was sitting in the cable car I got to look down on the venue for this year’s contest—the Altice Arena.

Getting back to my cable car ride, it only cost €3.95. Even a stingy Yorkshireman like me isn’t going to complain about that and the views are very good.
